A beauty pageant with a difference has
taken place in Saudi Arabia, with camels taking centre stage.
More than 700 of the beasts, known as the
'ships of the desert', have been competing this week.
There are no talent or swimsuit
categories, with the animals instead
judged on breed, colour, height and face

who have welcomed entrants from all over the Middle East.
It has proved hugely popular, with around 100,000 spectators turning out.

After the competition the camels
go under the hammer, with those considered
the most gorgeous attracting top dollar.
